Mike Backus

Lieutenant Mike Backus joined the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office in February of 2001. During his career at the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office, Lieutenant Backus has served in a wide-array of positions including; Corrections Officer, Court Security Deputy, Traffic enforcement Deputy (TLEP Program), Traffic crash investigator, Field Training Officer, Field Training Program Supervisor, and Firearms Instructor. Lieutenant Backus also served 5 years on the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team and 6 years in the TLEP program investigating hundreds of motor vehicle crashes in Stephenson and surrounding counties. Lieutenant Backus holds many State of Illinois law enforcement certifications to include; Field Training Officer, Firearms Instructor, Traffic Crash investigator and SWAT Officer. Lieutenant Backus is a graduate of the University of Illinois Corrections Academy (Sangamon) and the University of Illinois Police Training Institute Law Enforcement Academy (Class BLE2285).
