Assistant Jail Director Nathan Atherton joined the Stephenson County Sheriff’s Office on January 13th, 2004, being sworn in as a Correctional Officer and graduating from the Basic Correctional Officer Academy (Class # 2217) in September of that year.
Assistant Jail Director Atherton became a Field Training Officer in 2007. He was promoted to the rank of Corporal in November of 2015, promoted to the rank of Sergeant in December of 2017, and promoted to the position of Assistant Jail Director in 2024.
Assistant Jail Director Atherton has completed many certifications and classes throughout his career with the Sheriff’s Office: First Line Supervision, Leadership and Communication Excellence, Taser Instructor, Diversity in Law Enforcement, Field Training Officer, First Line Supervision-Mastering Leadership Skills, Dealing with Difficult People, Law Enforcement Records Management Law Analysis & Freedom of Information Act (ILETSB). Creating Reasonable and Defensible Employee Discipline.
